Answer #1

Language gives meaning to our cognition which is also known as semiotics. It consists of signs and symbols which renders meanings to cultural and social phenomena. The use of language has its dimension of power since it controls the way we think and the manner we see social or cultural categories. For example, the meaning behind the word 'heterosexual', straight, or bisexual influence our understanding of sexual orientation since they are embedded with particular phenomena different from each other. At the same time, language becomes a necessary tool to identify phenomena- such as the existence of people with no sexual interest. SInce the avaible languge cannot accomodate such categories new language emerges. Languge is both a creation and a product of the phenomena around us.
