Little research has taken place on clique and crowd composition after high school. Based on your observations and experience, what hypothesis would you propose about peer
group relations in emerging adulthood?
Based on my observations and experience of cliques in high school, i have noticed that they do exist, such as the studious group, sports group, hipsters etc. They have their own groups and do not interact much with the other groups. But, during the emerging adulthood stage, this changes. My hypothesis is that during the emerging adulthood stage, people become more mature and are able to identify and acknowledge the difference which they have with other people. This makes them accept other people who may not be like them. This of course does not mean that they do not have preference for whom they would like to be friends with, it just means that they are more open to accepting and understanding other people. Another reason why these cliques may be dissolved during the emerging adulthood stage is that during the high school years these people were still forming their identities and would be more pressured to be seen with a certain set of people. But during emerging adulthood stage they no longer feel this pressure and need to conform or to prove themselves.
