How does moral development relate to discipline? What is corporal punishment illegal in many countries?

Answer #1

Adults use disciplinary measures in order to guide children toward good behaviours. Since children lack sufficient capacities for moral reasoning, it is the adults responsibility to help them internalise standards of morality so that children behave well during their later years without external influence. However, the occurrence of immoral behaviour cannot always be prevented. Under such circumstances, various forms of discipline can to used as corrective or preventive measures.

Corporal punishment is the use of physical force in order to enforce discipline. It made illegal in many countries as it considered to be a violation of childrens’ rights. Also, it has been shown that children who are physically punished are more likely to become bullies, delinquents, and then abusive adults.
