Gene Cohen in his book, The Mature Mind, gives a new insight in human Development, especially from the middle adulthood which roughly starts from mid 30s. He doesn’t agree with Erikson’s development stages where at the age of 50 someone turns wise. He has broken down the last two stages into four such as Midlife Re-evaluation, Liberation, Summing Up and Encor.
During the first stage (Midlife Re-evaluation) in the mid 30s till 60s, people re-evaluates their life and career because they would have done some hasty decision due to their young age and now they would like to re-evaluate and settle things right.
During the second stage (Liberation), from 50s till 70s, people start thinking about whatever they had done so far and make more wise decision to further their career and life. They make lots of bold decisions and take enough risks to progress. They don’t think that they should stop growing.
During the third stage (60s till 80s), people ponder over all the things they had done by putting them in writing or recollecting them. They always think of giving the society back with gratitude. The recollect all the good things that the society had given them or they had accumulated from the society.
The final stage (Encore) starts around the 70s till the end of life, where people just calm down from their active life and spend their life peacefully. This stage is filled with reflection and celebration.
