Question (1)
What are the four stages in demographic transition theory? Apply this theory to the population history of the United States.
Stage(1): Preindustrial age: In this stage, both birth and death rate were very high in the US due to early marriages, illiteracy and social customs. Example: From 1790 to 1860, population growth rate per year was more than 35% in the US.
Stage(2): Transitional stage: With improved economic conditions and good healthcare facilities, the birthrate in the US remained same but death rate declined. Example: From 1860 to 1910, population growth rate per year became less than 20% in US.
Stage(3): Industrial stage: In industrial stage, people became more aware about their family plannings & family size in the US. Now, birthrate and death rate became low in US. Example: From 1910 to 2000, population growth rate per year became less than 15% in US.
Stage(4): Post-industrial stage: In this stage, due to very slow birthrates and death rates, population growth becomes almost stationary. Example: From 2000 onwards, population growth rate per year became less than 10% in US.
