The automobile positively impacted American society as the vast North American continent was connected by automobiles. Due to lowered production costs in 1900 and 1920, the number of cars owned by Americans increased from 8,000 cars to 8,000,000. Highways and interstates have allowed trucks and cars to arrive at their destinations faster. It is due to this reason only that the average American family has at least one car and spends more on transportation than on food (Young 232). Automobiles are considered a symbol of personal growth and development as teens look forward to getting a license and driving is an opportunity for freedom.
