What are some of the biological approaches used to treat psychological disorders?
Biological psychologists treat psychological disorders by targeting
underlying problems in the brain and nervous system. In order to
alleviate the symptoms, biological psychologists rely on
psychotropic drugs and medication. In general, there are five
categories of psychological drugs, including antidepressants,
anti-anxiety, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics and stimulants.
These are used to treat depression and related mood disorders,
anxiety disorders such as panic disorder and phobias, bipolar
disorder, schizophrenia, and attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder, respectively. Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) is another
treatment option in which seizures are electrically induced to
provide relief from symptoms. However, ECT is generally used as a
last resort in severely depressed or psychotic patients for whom
psychotherapy and medication have proven to be
ineffective.
