Depressed people often speak using a very specific linguistic pattern. They often will use more first person singular pronouns (words like I and me), more negative emotion words like gloomy and sad, and less positive emotion words like joyful and happy. A couple of years ago I did a series of studies looking at whether nondepressed people would use these same linguistic patterns when they were stressed out. I found that the more stress people report feeling in a social interaction the more “depressed language” words they use (Catler et al., 2018).
Suppose you totally don’t trust my work and want to replicate my study and see whether stress really does predict increased depressed language use. You measured stress on a 0(Not Stressed) – 6(Very Stressed) scale and you counted up the depressed language words (0 = no depressed language use). Your data are below.
Stress | Depressed Language |
6 | 20 |
5 | 15 |
4 | 10 |
2 | 3 |
6 | 30 |
1 | 8 |
0 | 5 |
2 | 1 |
5 | 18 |
A) Sketch a scatter plot for these data. Just looking at the scatter plot, describe the form, degree, and direction of the relationship. What Pearson r would you estimate for the graph? Explain your answers.
B)Calculate the regression equation for these data. Using a different color pen/pencil, plot the regression line on the scatter plot using the equation you calculated. Be sure to show all of your work for this process. ( I have calculated that SP=142.11 and SSx=40.22
C) Calculate the standard error of the estimate for these data. What does this value tell you about these data?
Please like for efforts.
A)The scatter plot indicates that there is a weak positive correlation between the two variables. The estimated Pearson r will be around +0.50. This is because if we form a line as an average of the points of the scatter plot, it will go linearly from bottom left to top right, this indicates positive correlation. For example- (not related to this data) if the line went linearly from top left to bottom right then this will show negative correlation. Since the points are scattered away from the line, there is a weak correlation.
B) The graph with regression line is as follows-
