In their study on juvenile delinquency, researchers Shaw and McKay Examined the spatial maps of the city of Chicago city to examine the residential locations of juveniles who were referred to Chicago courts. In their study, they found that the rate of crime was unevenly concentrated in particular areas of the city, and remained relatively stable within different areas despite continual changes in the populations who lived in each area. For instance,e the neighbourhood in the Center of the city which were the work centers, were the neighbourhoods with high crime rates. Interestingly, as the alleged crime-prone groups moved to lower-crime areas of the city, their rate of criminal activity decreased accordingly. Such observations in the distribution of crime led them to conclude that criminal tendencies of Individuals tend to correspond with the characteristic of the area of residence Thus, Shaw and McKay showed that crime was likely a function of neighbourhood dynamics rather than a result of the particular characteristics of the individuals living within the neighbourhood.
