Reason

What the question really comes down to is torque. If you see the formula for torque, it is given as

where T = torque generated

F = effort or force given to the lever

and d is the length of lever.

From this it becomes evident that, there is a trade off between force supplied and length of lever.

So, for less effort force applied, its wise to have a long lever. This is done to minimize the users's force and considerable amounts of energy.
