Explain the photoelectric effect concept and discuss one application using this effect by detailing its way of working. b) (15 points) Explain the difference between emission and absorption spectra of Hydrogen using the keywords: atoms, absorption/emission, wavelength, light intensity. Give an example where we can see such light absorption/emission by hydrogen atom.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Photoelectric effect -when photon(which has energ E=hc/lemda) strike on metal surface ,if energy of photon is more than the energy of outermost electron of metal (work function) then electron will come out from the metal srface and will move with kinetic energy equal to energy gape of photon eneryg and work function

application of photoelectric effect-

1-light metal in photography

2-electric eye door opener

B--

The difference between the absorption and emision spectra are that absorption lines are where light has been absorbed by the atom thus we can see a dip in the spectrum whereas emission spectra have spikes in the spectra due to atoms releasing photons at those wavelength.
