Is there a difference between forecasting demand and forecasting sales? Can demand be forecast from historical sales data?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Though forecasting demand and forecasting sales sound quite similar, there is difference between them. One of the biggest differences is the external factor and current market scenario. As that comparison ensures that it’s not necessary the demand of a certain product in past would be similar with the one in current or future. For example, the demand for a certain mobile technology which used to be 5 years back should not be in demand currently or in near future, as people would want the updated technologies. Yes, demand can be forecasted from historical sales data. In fact, sales history and such data are used in forecasting demand.

In their use of demand forecasting, they use smoothing to remove random variation(noise) from their historical demand. This allows them to better identify demand patterns (primarily trend and seasonality) and demand levels that can be used to estimate future demand. The following represents their Excel spreadsheet with...
