The structural theory of family considers the family as an integrated whole; where the emphasis should be not focused on individuals but on contextual. It should focus on family interactions to understand the structure or organization of the family. The structure of the family represents the operational rules governing the way family members interact with each other (Goldenberg & Goldenberg, 2000, p.198). These constraints are generically dictating the hierarchical structure of the family rule and idiosyncratic i.e. the individualized constraints rules. Families created following second marriages learn to function as one by following both the generic and idiosyncratic rules. For example, the spousal subsystem of the hierarchical structure can play the most important subsystem, due to the integral role it plays leading to the stability and flexibility of the family.
