Food safety, nutrition, and food security are closely linked. Unsafe food creates a vicious cycle of disease and malnutrition, particularly affecting infants, young children, elderly, and the sick. In addition to contributing to food and nutrition security, a safe food supply also supports national economies, trade, and tourism, stimulating sustainable development.

FDA has given several criterias or measure under which food is considered safe

The core messages of the Five Keys to Safer Food are: (1) keep clean; (2) separate raw and cooked; (3) cook thoroughly; (4) keep food at safe temperatures; and (5) use safe water and raw materials.

1) keep clean include :-

Wash your hands before handling food and often

during food preparation

Wash your hands after going to the toilet

Wash and sanitize all surfaces and equipment

used for food preparation

Protect kitchen areas and food from insects,

pests and other animals

2) keep separate food means:-

Separate raw, cooked, poultry, seafood

Use separate utensils for cooking of these separately

Jeep food in jar, to avoid contact between them

3) cook thoroughly

Seafood,meat and eggs should be cooked thoroughly beacuse of high chances of infection

Boil food like soup and stews properly

Reheat cooked food thoroughly

4) Temperature

Don't leave cooked food at room temp. For more than 2 hours

Refrigate properly all cooked and perishable food

Keep cooked food piping hot prior serving

Don't refrigerat food for too long

Don't thaw frozen food at room temperature

5) Raw materials and safe water:-

Use safe water to treat food safe and to keep it safe

Select fresh and wholesome food

Choose food process for safety (e.g; pasteurisation)

Wash foods and vegetables before eating

Don't use food beyond its expiry date
