As workplace religious diversity is on the rise, so too is costly and potentially dangerous conflict.Conflict that can often escalate into legal issues often arises around religious practices in the workplace. Triggers can include

  • conflict among different religious groups within the workplace
  • time-off to engage in religious observance
  • religious dress and headwear
  • Christmas time and the “holiday” party
  • attempts at proselytizing
  • and more

Religious diversity in the workplace can bring a company many benefits in the form of different viewpoints. Managing religious diversity in the workplace, however, can be challenging from a human resources standpoint. Tolerance and acceptance of religious views is vital, as well as being able to accommodate those who may need extra time off or may have special needs that are dictated by their religious preference. By following a few guidelines, it is possible to have a workplace that is enriched by its diversity.

How might the principles of respectful pluralism apply to this challenge?

Respectful pluralism is a framework, not a specific blueprint, for addressing inevitable conflicts that result from religious, spiritual, and other differences in the workplace. Pragmatic and moral issues that are context-specific will require that the view be adapted to fit well in any actual organization.
