Oral medications are the most preferred route of administering medications as it is the safest and does not require any skin puncture such as medications through intra venous.
The three disadvantages of oral medications are :

1. It's taste.

2. Slow absorption.

3. Gastrointestinal problems.

1. Many patients are unable to swallow oral pills because of its bitter taste and smell which can make them feel nauseous and hence refuse to take medications orally. Medications such as antibiotics usually leaves bitter taste in mouth.

2. Oral medications have to go through stomach where it will be broken down by the gastric acids which is then passed on to the circulation with the help of liver which takes a long process and hence cannot be administered in case of an emergency.

3. Gastrointestinal problems occurs due to oral medications as it imbalances the acidic environment of the stomach. Medications such as NSAIDs are known to cause GI problems.
