Thyroid hormone play a major role in thermoregulation through calorigenic effect. Thyroid hormone increase the basal metabolic rate, causes increase in cellular metabolism of carbohydrate, fat and lipids by stimulating the oxygen consumption by cells. The cellular metabolism produce energy and heat. Increased metabolism leads to increased heat production in the body.

Thermoregulation effect of thyroid hormone

Thyroid hormone stimulate additional sodium- potassium pump, thus the cells produce and use more ATP to continuously transport sodium ions from cystol to extracellular fluid and potassium ions from extracellular fluid to the cystol. The production and use of more energy causes a rise in body temperature known as the calorigenic effect. The absence of thyroid hormone leads to decrease in basic body temperature.
