Determine the cause of the positive DATs for the patients below:

Patient #2:

Mom is A negative with an Anti-D

Baby is A positive, DAT 2+

What antibody could be causing the positive DAT? ______________

Homework Answers

Answer #1

DAT is direct antibody test.Mother and baby have a negative and a positive blood group respectively.Mother's body will produce antibodies against baby's positive blood group. This antibodies can cross into baby's bloodstream and cause the baby's redblood cells to break.

In this case mom is a negative but she received a shot of Rho(D)immunoglobulin during pregnancy to prevent her from making antibodies against her baby's blood.Sometimes this injection can cause the DAT test positive. Another possibility is if the mother has developed ant-d antibodies in a previous pregnancy (she is already sensitized) then these immunoglobulin injections do not help.In this case yhe baby might have positve DAT test.Baby may need phototherapy treatment in DAT 2 positive case.

Robert Brown, transfusion ten years ago. The pretransfusion 2-cell screen was negative using LISS. Group O Rh(D)-negative units were compatible when crossmatched at immediate spin and were released. RB was transfused with two units of RBCs during hip-replacement surgery. One day following surgery, a delayed transfusion reaction was suspected because of a drop in hemoglobin. A transfusion reaction workup was requested. The pre- and post-samples were compared visually for hemolysis. The DAT on the post-reaction sample was microscopic positive. The...

Bacteria are the most common cause of sepsis, with 62.2% of patients with positive blood cultures harboring Gram-negative bacteria and 46.8% infected with Gram-positive bacteria. This overlap can be explained by polymicrobial sepsis, which is frequently simulated in mouse models. While Escherichia coli can be found in approximately 1 in 6 culture-positive patients, Gram-positive bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have made up an increasing percentage of sepsis with the advent of excessive antibiotic treatment. Now, you collected blood...

A 55-year-old male went to his physician complaining of feeling tired and run down.   Two months previously, he had pneumonia and was concerned that he might not have completely recovered.   He indicated that his symptoms only become noticeable if he goes out in the cold. A CBC was performed, showing that his WBC count was normal, his RBC count was just below normal.   A DAT performed on RBC's was weakly positive after incubating at room temperature for 5 minutes.   When...

A hospital is testing patients for a certain disease. If a patient has the disease, the test is designed to return a "positive" result. If a patient does not have the disease, the test should return a "negative" result. No test is perfect though. 90% of patients who have the disease will test positive. 10% of patients who don’t have the disease will also test positive. 20% of the population in question has the disease. If a random patient tests...

A 30-year old woman delivered a healthy 6lb 3 oz baby girl at 39 weeks. A cord sample was sent to the blood bank on delivery. Approximately 24 hours after delivery, the blood bank received a request to perform a "type and Coombs" on the baby, who appeared jaundice. The baby's blood had been tested and the total bilirubin was 15.4 mg/dL. The blood bank results are as follows: Forward type: Anti-A: 3+ Anti-B: 0 Reverse type: A cells: 0...
