Septic shock is defined as sepsis associated with hypotension and perfusion abnormalities(lactic acidosis, oliguria or an acute alteration in mental status) despite the fluid resuscitation.

Sepsis can progress to septic shock when certain changes in the Circulatory system , the cells, and the usage of energy becomes abnormal. This condition can result in death of the patient.

Infection > Bacteraemia > Systemic inflammatory response syndrome > Sepsis(signs of SIRS+infection) > Severe sepsis along with organ dysfunction > Sepsis with refractory arterial hypotension and perfusion abnormalities, despite adequate fluid resuscitation- that is SEPTIC SHOCK.
