Explain what septic shock is (sepsis, sometimes called blood posining). Explain mechanism behind septic shock. What causes it? (there are numerous ways and the subject is complex, the level of detila we covered in class is appropriate). Explain what is occurring in the body during septic shock that results in a fatal drop in blood pressure (and flow).

Septic Shock is due to wide spread infection leading to low BP and organelle failure.

Septic shock is a combination of distributive,, hypovolemic and cardiogenic shock.

1)Hypovolumic shock results from intravascular fluid losses due to capillary leak.
2)Cardiogenic shock results from the myocardial depressant efects of sepsis.  
3) Distributive shock due to decreased Systemic vascular resistance.

The degree of a patient exhibits these responses varies, but there are frequently alterations in, preload, aferload, and myocardial contractility.

Normally the host immune response try to prevent sepsis by humoral and cell mediated response.

Host immune response produces an infammatory
cascade of toxic mediators, including hormones, cytokines, and enzymes. If this cascade is not controlled, derangement of the microcirculatory system leads to further organ and cellular dysfunction.
