Heller Manufacturing has two production facilities that manufacture baseball gloves. Production costs at the two facilities differ because of varying labor rates, local property taxes, type of equipment, capacity, and so on. The Dayton plant has weekly costs that can be expressed as a function of the number of gloves produced:

TCD(X) = X2 − 3X + 5,

where X is the weekly production volume in thousands of units, and TCD(X) is the cost in thousands of dollars. The Hamilton plant’s weekly production costs are given by:

TCH(Y) = Y2 + 5Y + 3, where Y is the weekly production volume in thousands of units, and TCH(Y) is the cost in thousands of dollars. Heller Manufacturing would like to produce 8,000 gloves per week at the lowest possible cost. Formulate a mathematical model that can be used to determine the optimal number of gloves to produce each week at each facility. Solve the optimization model to determine the optimal number of gloves to produce at each facility.

Valence Pharmaceuticals has three manufacturing facilities in the US where they produce an anticancer drug. The drug is shipped from the plants to four distribution centers. Plants 1, 2, and 3 produce 12, 17, and 11 shipments per month, respectively. The distribution centers, A, B, C, and D, each needs to receive 10 shipments per month. Miguel and Jake run a paper company. Each week they need to produce 1,000 reams of paper to ship to their customers. The paper plant’s long-run production function is Q = 4K0.75L0.25, where Q is the number of reams produced, K is the quantity of capital rented, and L is the quantity of labor hired. For this production function, the MPL = K0.75/L0.75 and the MPK = 3L0.25/K0.25. The weekly cost function for the paper plant is C = 10K...
