These are the erratic times when employees are to be taken care of the most. One simply can't afford to be single minded towards the margins in a pandemic.
As a CEO of an MNC, I'd like to first see that what are the cost cutting measures I can deploy. Cutting employees' salaries & firing them would be second last & last respectively in my list. Because, in end of the day, it'd be employees who'd help my business bounce back when things get back to normalcy. Moreover, I'm bound to take care of them when they have everything to lose. Hence, if I'm not taking salary cut/layoff measures, then I'd like to call a meeting (in person/online), calling every employee of the company, assuring them that the company is with them & they needn't worry. This reassurance in the times like this, work wonders. Sometimes, steps like this are far motivating than monetary rewards.
If I'm forced to cut salaries/layoff employees, even in that case I'd choose to contact them personally, thank them for the faith they showed all these years, explaining them why this step had to be taken & assuring them that company would be happy to have them back as soon as it needs them. This creates the environment of trust, bond which travels miles across ethnicity, race & nationality.
