The most important thing is the surface. For fiingerprint collection, the surface prferred is always nonporous and smooth. Some investigators even use speical powder to dust fingerprints. It makes them easily visible to the eye. After that a tape is put on the powder and prints are lifted off the surface and saved somewhere for anlaysis.

If the surface is not smooth or flat, a silicone cast is made and sent for investigation.

It is also important to start a preliminary survey before starting the investigation.

The scene should be photographically captured and narrative should be prepared out of it. This is helpful in conducting a thorough research. A sketch can also be created in many cases.
