Protocols are a basic element within the science of encryption because they are one of the many things which need to be made secure with encryption algorithms, so that we can be used transfer(send & receive ) data securely over a network like the internet. In other words we can say that design of network protocals are one of the main/basic application area of cryptography.

The most basic and consistent nature of all security protocols is that they must provide encryption and/or authentication. The data sent through the protocal should be encrypted in such a way that it guarntees full security of data i.e. it can not be decoded by anyone , even if someone manages to break into the network and get access to unauthorized data.
Examples of secure protocols are IPSec, SSL ,SSH and Kerberos.
