Which of the following is a weak base? Explain. -CH3OH -CH3NH2 -Ca(OH)2 -LiOh -HCOOH

Which of the following is a weak base? Explain.

-CH3OH

-CH3NH2

-Ca(OH)2

-LiOh

-HCOOH

Homework Answers

Answer #1

LiOH is a strong base

HCOOH (formic acid) is a weak acid. But stronger acid than methanol.

Methanol (CH3OH) is also a weak acid.

Calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 is a strong base.

The hydroxides of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals are strong bases except Be(OH)2 & Mg(OH)2

The hydroxides of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals are stronger bases than other metal hydroxides. It is directly related to their ionic character. Ionic character of these hydroxides decreases down the group in alkai metals.

The basic nature of alkali metal hydroxides are more than that of hydroxides of alkaline earth metals.

Methanamine (CH3NH2 ) is a weak base.

The degree to which a weak base dissociates is given by the base-ionization constant, Kb. For the generic weak base, B B(aq)+H2O(l)⇌BH+(aq)+OH−(aq) this constant is given by Kb=[BH+][OH−]/[B] Strong bases will have a higher Kb value. Similarly, strong bases will have a higher percent ionization value. Percent ionization=[OH−] equilibrium/[B] initial×100% Strong bases, for which Kb is very large, ionize completely (100%). For weak bases, the percent ionization changes with concentration. The more dilute the solution, the greater the percent ionization....
