Substances tend to diffuse from higher to lower concentrations. So why is is that during osmosis, water moves from a lower solute concentration to a higher solute concentration?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Osmosis is the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules via a semi-permeable membrane, not solute molecules.

It occurs into a region of higher solute concentration to the direction that leans to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides.

But the solute will not move in osmosis due to presence of a semi-permeable membrane.

Then the solute concentrations on the two sides will equal by the solvent or water movement.

In osmosis moves water from high water concentration ( i.e. where there is much water ) to low water concentration or we can say that water moves from a lower solute concentration to a higher solute concentration. but here solute will not move. movement is only solvent or water.

During this experiment, two different concentrations of potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) are used. Part I uses a large concentration (~1 M) while Part II uses a much smaller concentration (~0.0025 M). Why are these respective concentrations required? Select all that apply. Gas exchange in fish is fairly efficient because: A. oxygen concentrations in water are higher than oxygen concentrations in air, making it easy for oxygen to diffuse from water into the blood. B. water with very high oxygen content flows in the same direction as blood with very low oxygen content, maintaining a small but consistent difference in oxygen content that encourages continuous diffusion of oxygen from water to blood. C. blood and water flow in opposing directions, maintaining a...

Explain why dissolving a nonvolatile solute in water affects the system in the following ways by selecting all true statements: (possible to have one or multiple answers) 1. The system has a higher boiling point than water. [] The soulte lowers the vapor pressure of the water. [] The solute increases the vapor pressure of the water. Diffusion experiment: What would diffuse faster, a low molecular weight dye, or a high molecular weight dye? Why did you need to keep refilling the dye in the well? Would it change your result if you ran out of dye during the experiment? When diffusion occurs, there needs to be a difference of molecules in the two areas. Molecules move from high concentration to where they are in lower concentration. This is called what?
