Answer #1

If you were in the lab how can you differentiate these compounds from each other : propanal,                 3-pentatone, 2- pentanone, Benzaldehyde and butanol in terms of solubility, melting and boiling point, ph etc?

Propanal <> b.p 48.8 oC

3-pentanone <>b. p. 102 oC,

2-pentanone <> b. p. 101oC, solubility in water = 6%

Benzaldehyde <> b. p. 178 oC

n-Butanol <> soluble in water, b.p 118 oC

Distinguishing 3-pentanone and 2-pentanone by physical properties would be difficult but can be easily differentiate by an iodoform test. 2-pentanone will give positive iodoform test.
