Explain how a student can differentiate between an example of cluster sampling and stratified sampling. You might want to give an example of each. These are the 2 most confused techniques of sampling.

Answer #1

In clustered sampling, the sample is divided into different clusters, then some clusters are selected and all the members in those particular cluster are sampled.

In stratified sampling, the population is divided into different strata and samples are taken proportionally from each of the strata.

Example: Consider a population of school children. The children are divided into different clusters based on which grade they are in. Then 2 grades, say grade 2 and 3, are selected and all students in those grades are taken as sample, this is cluster sampling.

In the same example, instead of choosing any 2 particular grades, 5% of students from each and every grade is selected as sample, to form a stratified sample.

You really want to accurately gauge the average GPA at each type of college. You want to ensure that you have the same number of participants from each type of college. To select your sample of 1000 students, you compile a list of the names of all the students at 2-year colleges, print each name on a slip of paper and put all the paper slips in a hat. You draw out 500 names. You then compile a list of...

____   Simple Random Sample ____   Cluster sample ____   Systematic sample ____   Stratified sample 1.   While this type of sampling is very eacy to carry out, and hence saves time and money, it can very easily yield samples which are non-representative of the population, unintentionally. Often, data comes "in cycles", where the beginning and the end of each cycle is "atypical". If the "kth" individual is picked at the beginning or at the end of a cycle more often than a...
