Assuming that MTBE reatcs in the atmosphere at the methyl group attached to the oxygen, use the principles of atmospheric reactivity to show that the first stable product in its decomposition sequence in the air is ester.
Please show and explain all steps and work.
Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is used in Gasoline. But this
chemical has strong affinity towards water and thus polluting it by
producing tertiary butyl alcohol(TBA).
MTBE can be oxidized to different compounds, depending upon which
carbon
atom the oxidant attacks,ie
1.the carbon of methyl group attached to the O atom
2.the tertiary C atom
3.C.atom of methyl group bonded with tertiary C.atOM.
(CH3)3C-O-CH3 produces tertiary butyl formate if oxidation happens at the methyl Catom attatched to the O atom.(CH3)3-C-(OC=O)H (TBF-tertiary butyl formate) .
MTBE yeilds t-butyl formate under atmospheric photo oxidation, wchich on hydrolysis produce t-butyl alcohol.
