Define Homogeneous equilibrium and heterogeneous equilibrium. Give two examples of each.
An equilibrium in which all the reactants and products are in the same phase is called homogeneous equilibrium.
eg.1. Reacion between nitrogen and hydrogen in a closed vessel
N2 (g) + 3H2 (g) 2NH3 (g) ; All the reactants and products are in homogeneous gaseous phase.
eg 2.
Fe3+(aq) +SCN-(aq) Fe(SCN)2+ (aq) ;All the reactants and products are in homogeneous solution phase.
Equilibrium in a system having more than one phase is called heterogeneous equlibrium
eg. 1. H2O (l) H2O(g) ; In equilibrium between liquid water and water vapour in a closed container, there is a liquid phase and a gas phase.
eg 2. Thermal dissociation of CaCO3(s)
CaCO3(s) CaO(s) + CO2 (g) ; This system contains solid and gaseous phase.
