what is principal intermolecular force responsible for solubility of ionic compounds in water? May choose from following: dipole-dipole forces ion-dipole forces dispersion forces hydrogen bonding Please explain answer.
The major intermolecular forces that are responsible for solubility of ionic compound in water is,
Ion - Dipole forces.
Due to larger difference of electronegativity between O and H, there exist partial positive charge on H and partial negative charge on O, so that dipoles can exist in water.
These dipole can attract the ions which are formed by the dissociation of ionic compound.
Partial positively charged H of H2O attracts negative ion and partial negatively charged O of H2O attracts positive ion of ionic compound.
