A Group III unknown is colorless. What cations are probably absent? Why should one not rely definitely upon such an observation?
The solution of Group III:
Co2+, Ni2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Cr3+, Al3+, Zn2+
Co2+ = red
Ni2´= green
Fe3+ = yellow/orange
Mn2+ = transparent, slightly pink
Cr+3 = black
Al+3 = transparent
Zn2+ = transparent
Most likely:
Zn2+, Al3+ and even Mn+2 could be in solution
Colo depends in concentration, if concentraiton is too low, then it will seem to fade or be transparent.
Also, combination of different colors such as yellow + blue will form green, which might confuse us as well
