How are glas beads used in fractional distillation as a column packing different than granular solid used in gas chromatography as a column packing? How are they similar?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The efficiency of fractional distillation depends on the use of the fractionating column. The fractionating column is packed with glass beads. It provides a large surface area for vapourisation and condensation of the liquid mixture.

The stationary phase is either a granular solid (i.e.-gas - solid chromatography),or a granular solid coated with a thin film of non volatile liquid (i.e. gas liquid chromatophy).

Here the similarity is fractional distillation and gas chromatography both are used for separation of mixture and in both cases glass beads and granular solid are act as stationary phase.

how does a vacuum reduce atmospheric pressure? boiling chips and vacuum distillation, respectively, are used in distillations to: A. provide nucleation sites that give the liquid a place to start forming bubbles to prevent super-heating; lower the boiling points of the substances to be distilled. B. lower the boiling points of the substances to be distilled; to work synergistically with the vacuum system to further lower the boiling points. Dialysis tubing comes in different ratings for permeability, depending on how big the holes are in the tubing. You are a dialysis technician and you must choose the right tubing for your patient. You choose the one with the pores that are just large enough to allow glucose to pass through but not larger molecules. Once the blood has passed through the machine and is back in the patient, identify which of the following substances will have been filtered from...
