In the following reactions, which of the reactants are the acid/bases:

A. Na2O + SO3 → Na2SO4

B. CO2 + CaO → CaCO3

C. CO + BF3 → F3B–CO

D. [Fe(H2O)6]3+ + H2O → [Fe(H2O)5(OH)]2+ + H3O+

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A. Na2O + SO3 → Na2SO4

According to Lux-Flood concept, Oxygen donar is a base and Oxygen acceptor is an acid hence

Na2O is basic oxide, SO3 is an acidic oxide

B. CO2 + CaO → CaCO3

CaO is basic oxide, CO2 is an acidic oxide

C. CO + BF3 → F3B–CO

According to Lewis concept, electron pair donar is base and electron pair acceptor is an acid

hence, CO is a lewis base, BF3 is an acid

D. [Fe(H2O)6]3+ + H2O → [Fe(H2O)5(OH)]2+ + H3O+

According to Bronsted concept, H+ donar is acid and acceptor is a base

Hence, [Fe(H2O)6]3+ is an acid, H2O is a base
