what is the purpose of distillation of water methanol mixture

what is the purpose of distillation of water methanol mixture

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Distillation is a process for separation of substances. It takes advantages od boiling point difference.

It is normally carried at a constan pressure.

For a water-methanol mixture:

The advatnage of a water-methanol mixture is that there is NO azeotrope, that is, you can get 100% of pure products separated.

The metanol boils at 64.5°C and water at 100°C; therefore, in the vapor phase (distillate) you find the methanol and at the liquid pahse ( bottoms) the water

A mixture of 1000 kg/h contains an equal parts by mass of methanol and water is distilled. Product streams leave the top and the bottom of the distillation column. The flow rate of the bottom stream is measured at 673kg/h and the overhead stream is analyzed and found to contain 96 wt % methanol. a. construct a flowchart of the process and perform the degree of freedom analysis. 1. A mixture of immiscible liquids (both water-insoluble) is subjected to steam distillation. At 90°, the vapor pressure of pure water is 526 mm Hg. If the vapor pressure of compound A is 127mm Hg and that of B is 246 mm Hg at 90°: (a) What is the total vapor pressure of the mixture at 90°? I performed a lab experiment for Simple & Fractional Distillation. For simple distillation I got 21.7% of methanol and 78.3% of water. For fractional distillation I got 16.7% of methanol and 83.3% of water. My question is: Did fractional distillation show better separation than simple distillation? Yes or no? I confused in numbers.

It is desired to design a distillation column to separate Methanol and Ethanol. One must obtain 100 kmol / hr of distillate with a mol concentration of 0.95 from a liquid stream saturated with 35 mol% of methanol. For this purpose, there will be a Reboiler and a total capacitor that can eliminate 12000 Kcal / h (λ = 40Kcal / Kmol), and allows a return flow of saturated reflux to the tower. If the concentration of bottom product should...
