In lab we extracted benzoic acid and fluorine in a mixture with diethyl ether. I understand how benzoic acid was extracted using NaOH and then HCL but I am confuses how the fluorine was extracted once the NaOH and saturated Nacl was added. What kind of mechanism/reaction occurred that allowed extraction to occur?

Answer #1

Answer:

To the Diethyl ether dissolved Benzoic acid and Fluorine mixture NaOH solution added. The Benzoic acid reacts with the NaOH and forms as a Sodium Benzoate salt.

The acidification of the sodium benzoate salt it becomes the free acid.

The substances given are 50% benzoic acid, 40% benzoin, and 10%1,4-dibromobenzene. I need a seperation scheme, i know i have to use extraction and recrytallization to seperate each. I am just confused which substances to use, the solvents available are water, 1.0M NaOH, 6.0m NaOH, 1.0M HCl, 6.0M HCl, 1M NaHCO3, saturated aq sodium chloride, dichloromethane, diethyl ether, 95% ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, hexane, and toluene. thank you for any help!

*Explain how the products were extracted with acid and base (explaining solubility in particular layers)* Phenyl acetate was reacted with anhydrous aluminium chloride. As soon as the HCl evolution subsided, the flask was heated for 1 hour. The flask was then allowed to cool and 100g of ice and 15ml of HCl was added. The mixture was then extracted with three 20ml portions of ether. The ether extracts were combined and the phenolic materials were extracted with two 50ml portions...
