If I have a mixture of
50% 2-chlorobenzoic acid, 40% flourene, 10% 1,4-dibromobenzene
and i'm trying to purify the 2-chloreobenzoic acid and flourene seperately through recrystillization, which solvent should I use for each?
I understand it is due to the sollubility of each but I am still confused.
Sovlent options are 1M NaOH, 6M NaOH, 1M HCl, 6M HCl, 1M NaHCO3, saturated NaCl, diethyl ether, 95% ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, hexane, toluene, methylene chloride, and anhydrous sodium sulfate.
Please explain, thanks!!
Ans> First we will add methylene chloride and centrifuge. There will be a leftover solid which is the p-dibromobenzene or 1,4.dibromobenzene. Then we add 6M Hcl which solubilizes the 2-chlorobenzoic acid. We also can use 1M NaOH which is a base and will deprotonate the 2-chlorobenzoic acid and this will make it precipitated as a sodium salt or it will become soluble but others will not. Then we add anhydrous sodium sulftate and then evaporated in a hot bath to get the solid fluorene. This is one of the proposed process for the separation of this mixture.
