What reagent will react by addition to what unsaturated hydrocarbon to form each of the following compounds?

a. CH3CH=CHCH3

B.CH3CH2OSO3H

C. (CH3)2CHOH

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution :-

Alkene and alkyne undergoes addition reaction.

For the reaction in the part a the product is alkene therefore starting matirial will be alkyne which is reduced to the alkene by using the H2/Pb Lindlar catalyst to give alkene.

in the part b reaction when alkene is reacted with H2SO4 then it forms the desired product

In the part c reaction when alkene is reacted with aqueous acid then it forms the more substituted alcohol product.

Following image shows the reactant and reagents for each reaction
