chloride gas (Cl2) and Barium solid (Ba) react together in a redox reaction to produce barium chloride solid.

Write a balanced equation for this redox process

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We know that oxidation means increase in oxidation state and reduction means decrease in oxidation state.

The balanced equation is

Ba(s)+Cl2(g)-------->BaCl2(s)

=> Here Ba(s) has oxidation state=0 and it is increased to +2 when react with chlorine gas. So Ba(s) is oxidised.

=> Cl2(g) has oxidation state of 0 and it is decreased to-1 after react with -1. So it is reduced.

Here both oxidation and reduction occurs, so it is called Redox reaction.
