Do all compounds absorbe UV / vis light ?

Give an example if with AID

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Molecules containing conjugated system of pi electrons absorb light closer to the visible region than saturated molecules with isolated double or triple bonds.Longer the conjugated system the longer the wavelength of the light absorbed.

For instance ethylene (H2C=CH2) absorbs light of wavelength in the far ultraviolet region of the emr at 180nm

1,3-butadiene(CH2=CH-CH=CH2 with two conjugated double bonds absorbs at 217 nm and is closer to the visible region

UV-VIS SPECTROPHOTOMETRY The mole ratio between a metal , M+ , and a ligand, L, were determined using the continuous variation method. The yellow complex formed absorbs light at 400 nm. Stock solutions containing 1.00 × 10–4 M of each reactants were prepared. Different volumes of the stock solutions were mixed to give 9 different solutions, each having a total volume of 3.00 mL . Table 1 shows the volume of the ligand, L, used and the corresponding absorbances. Table...
