Question

why was it necessary to wash the crude cyclohexene product (part A) with aqueous sodium carbonate?...

why was it necessary to wash the crude cyclohexene product (part A) with aqueous sodium carbonate? (Give an equation)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer:- Generally, cyclohexene is prepared from the dehydration of cyclohexanol using acid (H3PO4 or H2SO4 ) as a catalyst. The crude cyclohexene (alkene) formed contains many impurities like unreacted alcohol , water, and traces of acid. To remove or to neutralize the acidic impurities, generally the product (cyclohexene) is washed with sodium carbonate solution. After, treatment with aqueous sodium carbonate , the product get washed with water to remove excess sodium carbonate, unreacted alcohol and other water-soluble impurities.

H2SO4 (impurity) + Na2CO3 (aq)    Na2SO4 (aq) + H2O (l) + CO2(g)

The Solvay process for the manufacture of sodium carbonate begins by passing ammonia and carbon dioxide through a solution of sodium chloride to make sodium bicarbonate and ammonium chloride. The equation for this reaction is H2O + NaCl + NH3 + CO2 NH4Cl + NaHCO3 In the next step, sodium bicarbonate is heated to give sodium carbonate and two gases, carbon dioxide and steam. 2NaHCO3 Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O What is the theoretical yield of sodium carbonate, expressed in...
