Why do we wash with sodium bicarbonate? What gas evolves when washing with sodium bicarbonate?
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is base. It can be used to wash to remove any acidic impurities. Since it is base , reaction with acid impurites easier one to happen. If any organic layers ( compounds or liquids) contains acid impurities ( preferely weak acid or dilute acids), you can was with satuated NaHCO3 solution to getrid of acid impurites.
Reaction of NaHCO3 with any acid to produce a salt and CO2
CH3COOH + NaHCO3 → CH3COONa + CO2 + H2O
carbon dioxide(CO2) gas evolves when washing( reacting) with sodium bicarbonate
