Problem 6.86 Identify the substance in each of the following pairs that would have the higher boiling point : |
Part A NaCl or HCl H2O or H2S NH3 or PH3 N2 or NH3 |
NaCl or HCl: NaCl is an ionic compound and on the other hand HCl have less ionic character. so NaCl have higer boiling point.
H2O or H2S: H2O have higer boiling point. as H2O have higher electronegative O atom. so take part in H bonding.
so H2O is liquid and H2S is gas.
NH3 or PH3 : NH3 have higher boiling point because N is more electronegative than P. so NH3 take part in H-bonding.
N2 or NH3: N2 is nonpolar molecule and NH3 is polar molecule due todifference in electronegativity of N and H. so NH3 have higher boiling point.
