when doing distillation, under what conditions would you want to have an ice bath around receiving flash where you collect the distillate?

Answer #1
  • The distillation is used for the separation of two liquids by heating.
  • The sample is taken in round bottom flask fitted with thermometer placed in ice bath.
  • We can heat the flask slowly. The purified compound will boil and thus turn to vapours. These vapours are gone in to the receiver.
  • Place boiling chips in flask due to prevent the super heating.
  • All the liquid is vaporised we can reemove heat.
  • Never heat closed system.
  • Observe all joints are secured tightly.
  • The distillate collect in receiver flask.

When doing sublimation, what effect does the ice breaker on top of the Petri dish, have, if any, on the sublimation process (any effect on vapor pressure)? Would the ice bath affect the compound’s vapor pressure? Don’t think so, but just curious

When doing an adiabatic flash calculation for a continuous flow process where a liquid at high pressure is “flashed” to lower pressure to produce a mixture of gas and liquid you know: Inlet: Temperature (T1), Pressure (P1), molar flowrate (F) and mole fractions (zi). Outlet: Pressure (P2) For this adiabatic flash: a) Draw a picture and clearly label the unknown variables b) Write down the equations (in terms of the above variables) that you would have to solve in order...

1. a) draw the structure of the product you would have isolated if you had used NaBD4 in D2O in this experiment, write a mechanism explaining the result. (b) give the product structure for the same reaction using NaBD4 in H2O. Assume that there is no hydrogen exchange between NaBD4 and the solvent.
