How was the structure of Fe3(CO)12 was determined from an infrared spectrum in reaction of Fe3(CO)12 with triphenylphosphine.
The reaction of the two goes as under-
Fe3(CO)12 + P(Ph)3 -------------- Fe(CO)4PPh3 + Fe(CO)3(PPh3)2
The structure of the ractant and the product are as under with their IR data-
a) Fe3(CO)12 Peak 1- Weak Absorption due to terminal CO region at 1997cm-1 and
Peak 2 - Due to Bridging CO region around 1830cm-1.
b) Fe(CO)4PPh3No peak seen due to Bridging ligand and the same was absent in the case of Fe(CO)3(PPh3)2.
