What happens to retention time of a compound as you: a) decrease column temperature. b) increase length of column. c) increase flow rate of carrier gas?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) When you decrease column tempreature retention time will increase, because your compound will not interact that much strongly with the stationary phase.

b) As column length increases your retention time also increases proportionally because when we increase the length of column then the molecule has to travel more length as compare to prevoius case, so automatically retention time will increase.

C) Increasse in gas flowrate decreases retention time because compund doesnt have much time to interact with the stationary phase and the purity also decrease in this case.
