Why is a DMSO a poor choice for a recrystallization solvent (be specific)?
Recrystallization principle involves compound should be insoluble in solvent at room temperature and soluble at high temperature.
DMSO is also called as a universal solvent as it dissolves all the organic compounds in it at room temperature. Also, if there is any compound which can be crystallized at low temperature, DMSO becomes more difficult as melting point of DMSO is 18 °C. If temperature is lowered then DMSO will precipitate.
therefore we can't use DMSO as recrystllization solvent.
