List the following molecules in order of increasing heat of combustion and explain why.
A: 2,3,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentadiene
B: 2-isopropyl-1,4-pentadiene
C: 3,3-dimethyl-1,5-hexadiene
D: 4,5-dimethylcyclohexene

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Heat of combustion is inversely proportional to stability of Alkene. More the stability lesser the heat of combustion and vice-versa.

More substituted Alkene is more stable by Saytzevs rule.

And conjugate dienes are more stable than non conjugate dienes.

A is conjugate diene hence more stable and least heat of combustion.

B is more substituted diene than C . Hence B has less heat of combustion than C.

And D is least stable than all hence most heat of combustion.

Order: A<B<C<D
