Rank the following bases in order of increasing base strength and explain why. (1 = weakest, 4 = strongest)

NHCl2

NH2Cl

NH3

NCl3

Homework Answers

Answer #1

weakest base is NCl3

strongest base is NH3

NH3 is strongest base because the lonepair of electrons on 'N' atom in NH3 are free and they willl give lone pair easily. according to Lewis acid base pai theory, which donates lone pair easily is strongest base, so NH3 will be strongest base.

NCl3 is weakest base because the lonepair of electrons present on 'N' atom in NCl3 are not free to donate easily, they are attracted by clrine atoms, this is because chlorine is most electronegative atom and attracts electrons towrds itself. so NCl3 is weakest base.

order of basicity is NCl3 < NHCl2 < NH2Cl < NH3
