Briefly explain what is meant by “Type A positive” and describe what can happen in a blood transfusion if donor and recipient are not properly matched. Can person with Blood type A+ receive A- blood?
Type A positive means that the person with this trait would have antigen A expressed as well as Rh protein present on their red blood cells giving it a phenotype of A and positive respectively. If donor and recipient blood types are not matched, then the immune system of the recipient will consider the RBCs from the donor as foreign particles and act against those RBCs to destroy them causing inflammation and other problems.
Yes, the person with blood type A+ can recieve A- blood because A- means Rh proteins are not present so imune cells would not act against such RBCs but if the case is oppisite, A- can not take blood from A+ as the Rh protein present on RBC from donor will cause immune response.
